There she was, stretched out on her picknick blanket in Amsterdams’ Vondelpark - as suddenly the ideas popped into Caroline's head. "What if there were pillows that matched nature in color? And what if then there would be this smart little detail?” Soon plans for the new Stoov Stonewashed Canvas line emerged. But let our Product Designer tell you more....
Before a totally new line is created, a lot of thinking goes into it. We dived into customer surveys and questions like: What materials do you like? And what colors? These questions got me going. Of course, I also questioned myself and I have a clear preference for natural materials and colors that are also soft and warm to the touch.
We knew where our new line was going to be used, so we started looking for suitable materials. We saw that canvas is used for most products meant to be used outdoors. Think of tents, bags and jackets. This is because canvas is waterproof and hard-wearing, as well as having a soft texture. So choosing canvas was a logical step.
We screened so many different canvas fabrics! Withiin that questions like “What is the thickness?” or “How does the fabric handle heat?” needed to be answered. We even did a test to see how quickly leaves and twigs fall off the fabric and how sensitive it would be to dirt. It has really been a fun and comprehensive study.
With the first samples, we always request a lot of colors. Some colors we really didn't like and some jumped right out at us. We noticed that the fabric was stiff and had no stretch. This is the reason that after the first samples we needed to change the size of the covers a bit. Now they fit perfectly.
There certainly is! We added a little strap on the back of the cushions so you can easily hang them onto something. A smart detail, which we might want to experiment more with in the future.
